Perhaps "get your piss hot" was a poor choice of words for Garrett Nelson. In the proper context it makes sense and is a hilarious sound-bite.
But.... I'm sure it brought back some unpleasant flashbacks, or should I say "splash-backs," (I'm so sorry) of balloons filled with hot Colorado piss and other fluids that are best left unmentioned.
That's what happens when a coach decides it wants to be rivals and then proceeds to stoke the flames until fans take it WAY too far to the point where it's not even fun anymore. Rivalries are great. The back and forth trash talk is fun. But when it gets taken to the point of physical assault and people thinking "Hey, wouldn't it be hilarious if I covered that person with my bodily fluids?" they've taken it way too far and it's frankly disturbing they need to be told they've taken it too far.
But if you're in Boulder this weekend, just remember to not stoop to their level. Honestly, that's what really gets them going. I've seen more Colorado fans than I can count on Twitter who fully acknowledge their atrociousness, but claim Nebraska fans aren't any better. Trust me, they are fully prepared to do 30 minutes of digging to find that one Nebraska fan out there somewhere tweeting "Sal is dead, go big red" to justify that claim and their behavior.
So don't be that fan. Don't get into cussing matches with Colorado fans. Don't fight with them. Don't throw anything thrown at you back at them.
And I get it. It's hard to turn the other cheek. It's obnoxiously stupid that Nebraska fans have to go out of their way to take an Uber to the stadium to avoid having their cars keyed and that they have to keep a constant lookout for flying objects. It's stupid that some fans are scared of taking their kids to the game. And it's downright dumb that the Nebraska fans from Boulder that I sat next to at last year's Colorado game said they would rather make the 8 hour drive to watch Nebraska vs. Colorado in Lincoln because it just flat out wasn't worth enduring 4 quarters of hate and venom at Folsom Field.
On a side note, I hope they changed their minds and will be at this year's game.
But remember retaliating is just what they want you to do. It's what any bully wants. To be acknowledged, to feel that everybody is just as bad as them. And that story you might give them to spread of that "Nebraska fan who punched me" is what keeps that hate flowing, because you know they're leaving out the part where they were only punched because they were throwing piss balloons.
Nebraska fans have a phenomenal reputation nationally. Colorado's goal is to tear down that reputation in order to convince themselves that deep down everybody is as bad as them.
Don't give them that satisfaction. But more importantly, be a good fan because that's just what a decent human being does.
And hey, hopefully they're hopelessly outnumbered this time around anyway and this will all be for nothing! Have fun and represent Nebraska well tomorrow.
